A Japanese antique low table with a remarkably restrained and architectural presence.

Constructed from a thick solid wood top with two small drawers integrated beneath, the piece recalls the traditional Japanese culture of floor-level living and working. Though originally utilitarian in nature, it now carries a sculptural quality that feels strikingly contemporary.

The wood surface has softened beautifully through years of use, revealing subtle variations in tone, knots, grain movement, and natural cracks. The gently eased edges and straightforward construction embody a quiet mingei sensibility rooted in honesty of material and form.

The small iron drawer pulls add a subtle accent to the otherwise minimal composition.

Estimated to date from the early Showa period
(circa 1920s–1940s).

The tabletop is likely made from zelkova (keyaki) or Japanese ash/sen wood, while the base and drawer structure appear to utilize cedar. The exposed grain and lighter structural timber particularly suggest Japanese cedar construction beneath.

Originally intended as a writing desk or work table, the piece now functions beautifully as a low table, display platform, or sculptural furnishing within contemporary interiors.
